Henry Lehrman Present to Model Told;

Rappe Girl's Fiancé in

Costly Gift

Jocelyn Leigh, pretty modiste's model, who in private is Miss Mary Alice Simpson, daughter of Walter H. Simpson, 5034 Grand Boulevard, gave today another version of the story of the $700 brocade and mink coat on which Henry Lehrman, movie magnate, made the initial payment of $75.00 in Mme. Routon's exclusive little shop in New York.

 
Miss Leigh explained how it was that Lehrman, at the time he was supposed to be grieving for his fiancée, Virginia Rappe, and shortly after he had sent $1000 for funeral flowers for the latter, should be engaged in purchasing an expensive coat for the little Chicago model.
 
"Mr. Lehrman," she said "owed me $700 for work I had done for him I wanted the coat.  It was a beautiful brocade affair, trimmed with real mink fur.  I had seen it in Mme. Routon's place.  The price was exactly what was coming to me--$700." 
 
"I went to Mr. Lehrman and drew $75 on account.  I took the $75 and paid it down on the coat.  It was the initial payment required.  When I went for a first fitting, the coat didn't suit.  The shop people refused to alter to suit me.  I told them I didn't want the coat and asked for my payment back.  They declined to refund the money."
 

"I went straight to Mr. Lehrman and told him about
it."
 
"Don't worry," he said; "we'll get around them."

"It was then that he withdrew his bank account, before they had a chance to cash the check for $75.00.  This was the only reason he did so.  The story that he had promised me the coat and then had reneged is not exactly correct.  Mr. Lehrman and I were always good friends and he was honorable in his relations with me."
